Gran Turismo Sport Has A New Way To Make Online Gamers Act Like People

Gran Turismo Sport, the latest in Sony’s epic racing sim series, is supposed to take multiplayer gaming to a new level with FIA-sanctioned online racingavailable to everyone. So how do you keep things civil and competitive?

Anyone who’s ever played a video game online knows that no matter how well organized and professional the game’s interface is, you’re still going to encounter jerks breaking the rules and hammering obscenities into the group chat.

In a Gran Turismo Sport presentation on Thursday, game designer Kazunori “Kaz” Yamauchi made the point of telling us (through his translator) that the playing experience would be something anybody could get into whether this was their first racing game or they already have a steering wheel hooked up to their TV.

“We wanted to make it fun for first time gamers, or even drivers,” said Kaz. He really emphasized how much he wanted Gran Turismo Sport to be a conduit for discovering cars. “I remember walking into a BMW dealership at age 12,” he went on, “my heart was racing.” Kaz hopes to create a similarly emotional experience for GT players with 140 vehicles that have been beautifully rendered for your driving pleasure.

But the other side of Gran Turismo Sport’s appeal is supposed to be next-level online competition. The FIA has sanctioned international digital championships and in some countries, completing challenges in the game will actually help progress you toward acquiring a real competition license.

With the whole world’s range of drivers playing, the multiplayer experience needs to be curated. Simply put, that will be done with a significant scoring emphasis on “racing etiquette.”

Before competing in Gran Tursismo Sport’s sanctioned championships races, players have to finish offline challenges that will teach you moves like how to carry speed through a corner and how much throttle to use where. There will also be prerequisite training mini-games that teach the better side of racing; how to pass without bumping, and how to drive without ruining everyone else’s day.

Players will have to prove they have these skills before competition in the major online championships, which will be vast and diverse featuring everything from single-make manufacturer cups, regional cups, age-class cups, and more.

But Gran Turismo Sport goes a step further to enforce good behavior in online gaming – players are continuously scored on their performance and etiquette, as two different metrics, which factor into the game’s matchmaking system while you’re online looking for multiplayer matches.

Track times and race places will get you your performance score, while bumping, cutting corners, leaving the track, and ignoring flags and other such behavior will factor into your etiquette score.

Kaz and his team of developers hope that will keep the “hardcore” players happy, the maniac bumper car players quarantined, and everyone in between racing with like-minded individuals.

It appears that only the most elite clean and quick drivers will be able to step up to the real-deal FIA racing.

It’s still some five months until the game’s release (November 15th, 2016) and over that period of time Kaz has promised even further tweaks toward perfection. After that, we’ll finally get to see if all that scrutiny on in-game behavior pays off.

As promised, a new wave of Pokemon Sun and Moon announcements have been made today by way of a trailer revealing new versions of existing Pokemon, brand-new Pokemon, and more.

Among Sun/Moon's new features are Alola Forms, which provide a new look and type for existing Pokemon. (Alola is the game's new region.) Most striking of these is Exeggutor's--the formerly plump coconut tree-looking creature has grown a giraffe-sized neck, and judging by some of its faces, it's psyched about that.

It's also now a Grass/Dragon-type, as opposed to a Grass/Psychic-type as in the past. Other Alola Forms shown off include Vulpix (Ice), Ninetales (Ice/Fairy), Sandshrew (Ice/Steel), and Sandslash (Ice/Steel)

The video goes on to provide a look at some other new Pokemon, such as Minior, a floating rock that can shed its outer shell, and Gumshoos, which sports a Donald Trump-esque hairdo. The many styles of Oricorio are also shown, including one that makes it look like a cheerleader (appropriately called the Pom-Pom style). Each of Alola's different islands has a different style that calls it home.

Later in the video we see Mudbray, a Ground type, and two new Grass types: Fomantis and its evolved form, Lurantis. The latter brings with it a new move, Solar Blade.

Other new features on display are the ability to ride Pokemon and something called Z-Moves, which are described as a new way to attack. Each type has its own spectacular-looking Z-Move, which can only be used once per battle.

Pokemon Sun and Moon are set for release on November 18 on 3DS.

Update 2: Following Daily Motion taking his videos down, Daymeeuhn posted an update to Reddit saying that he would not be making any more videos. "That's it from me video-wise," he said. "[Hello Games] and Sean [Murray] don't like it, it's giving me a headache dealing with the fallout [full games review] I don't want to be the guy that spoiled all this cool s***, and I'm just leaving it at that!"

Talking with Kotaku, Daymeeuhn explained further that Sean Murray's disappointment made him feel bad about leaking footage. He said, "I expected Sean to tweet negatively about it because, let's face it, it's his job to... But I'll admit, after watching so many of his interviews and knowing how cool of a guy he seems, it did make me feel a bit guilty. It wasn't the sole reason for my decision, but it was certainly a factor."

Update: The videos have been removed from Daily Motion, although they're being uploaded again by other users on sites like YouTube.

No Man's Sky is one of the most anticipated games of the year, and it's supposed to launch on August 9 on PS4 and PC. But one fan got his hands on the game early, and he has begun posting videos of it online.

A person going by the username Daymeeuhn apparently purchased a leaked PS4 copy of the game for a really large sum--according to this post on Reddit, he spent $1250 for the chance to play it early (the Ebay listing has since been removed, so take this number with a grain of salt). He has also begun publishing videos of the game on Daily Motion, and he says that he'll continue to do so.

This is surely not what publisher Sony or developer Hello Games wanted, and it's likely that Sony is attempting to get the videos removed from Daily Motion right now. At the moment, however, they're all live, and Daymeeuhn says that he'll post a new video shortly. In addition, Hello Games' Sean Murray has asked fans on Twitter to not watch the videos, saying, "We've spent years filling No Man’s Sky with surprises. You've spent years waiting. Please don't spoil it for yourself."
